gerbie	6:06p	Mario Vargas Llosa – The feast of the goat Mario Vargas Llosa – The feast of the goat Vargas Llosa wrote many beautiful books, some of which I had read when I discovered this volume. A story about a country I learned to like a lot, that has been very important for me, written by an author I love to read. Try to find a better combination. The goat in the title is Rafael Leonidas Trujillo, dictator in the Dominican Republic from 1930 ‘til 1961. His nickname likely stems from his many sexual escapades, preferably with (very) young girls. Three storylines make up the novel. The story of the dictator himself, the daily business in and around the palace, in the local prisons, the parties, the girls, his staff and the politicians surrounding him. The second point of view in the book is a group of dissidents with a plan to kill the evil dictator. Their preparations and especially the last hours before the murder are well lit in this book. Finally there is the story about Urania Cabral. Her father was a minister, she grew up surrounded by many people who never saw or didn’t want to see the evil schemes a country living under a dictator inevitably has. We follow her, years later, for the first time back in her native country after years in exile in the United States. This storyline is responsible for the title ‘novel’ on the cover of this book. She is the fictional character, it is because of her looking back in time that the reader gets to know what an animal the dictator actually is. Vargas Llosa manages well to mingle the three story lines. He draws you in, bit by bit, which means that halfway into the book, you (the reader) must have an idea what will happen next, how it will all end, but mainly you’re so curious you want to continue reading. To me, that is a sign that a book must be well written, the author manages to drag you straight in. Given my background, ten months in the Dominican Republic at the end of my study, this book is certainly recommended. A few aspects had my extra attention. The sisters Mirabal obviously appear in this novel. Any story about the resistance in Santo Domingo cannot ignore their role. In this book their role is small though, not more than a mere mention. Then again I had already read a children’s book while I lived there and later the brilliant ‘In the time of the butterflies’ by Julia Alvarez. But the best supporting role to me has to be Joaquin Balaguer. Prime minister under dictator Trujillo, president after he died. Not only that. Over thirty years later, on my first entry into the country, he is back into power. Without any doubt he is the most important politician in the country during the last century. Not the dictator, but the man who lived to be a politician and was beyond ninety when he died, still in a support role for the current president, turned out to be the most historical figure in this book. Vargas Llosa has written a beautiful book about a country that for many remains only known as a holiday destination. Somewhere in the Caribbean whit many luxury All Inclusive Resorts near fabulous beaches. Where everybody always seems to be optimistic, where life is always fun. Unfortunately life wasn’t always fun, this book certainly proves that. Better than an ordinary history book, more catchy than a nivel, this book is recommended for anyone who likes to read about politics, who likes thrillers, good stories, true stories, history, basically anybody eager for a good book. gerbie	9:29p	Daniel Tammet – Born on a blue day Daniel Tammet – Born on a blue day (09-058) I hardly remember where, but I’m sure I saw Tammet on television one day. I read about him in the paper later, when he had one week to learn Icelandic and was interviewed in that language at the end of it. He also wrote a book, so sometime later, when I bumped into the book online, I remembered his story and decided to buy the book. The story of his life is quite interesting. Suffering from Asperger he has some extreme sides to day to day life. He thinks calculations are easy. All of them. When some extreme intelligent people start to lose the plot, he is still there. He is faster than most people using calculators. Apart from that, he has the ability to learn languages really quick. Finnish was one of the first languages he learned. I remember about half a dozen words in that language, enough to know that it’s a language I will never speak in my life, far too complicated for me, even though some people around me think I have talent for languages. Tammet has Savant Syndrome. He is not good at everything. Simple day to day tasks that any normal person can do, will prove to be an enormous effort for him. Social contacts, things that are commonly known, thing people do automatically can be too complicated for the Savant. Tammet has written an autobiography to tell the world about his life. About living with Asperger. About Rain Man, but beyond the movie. It certainly is interesting to read. On the other hand, given his natural need for structure, it is not a surprise that this book also needs a structure and dozens of examples, where sometimes the book could have done without half of those examples and certainly with a little bit more adventure instead of structure. I was glad the book didn’t last much longer than it did. I was quite surprised how he coped with all the media attention. Earlier in his life he lost chess matches when winning, just because his opponent did something out of the box, causing him to lose all concentration. In the end of the book he was flown to the US to be on the David Letterman show on short notice, yet he goes and manages a decent interview. Tammet proves that social skills, not natural for anyone with Asperger, can be learned. I guess a great relief for many parents these days with children suffering from the disease. gerbie	4:06p	Jan Mulder – Strafschopgebieden & reserves   Jan Mulder – Strafschopgebieden & reserves Het verzameld sportwerk van Jan Mulder kwam begin deze eeuw uit in een aantal dikke bundels. Dit is deel 4 daarvan. Ik heb bewust een tijdje gewacht met het lezen ervan, vier van dit soort dikke pillen achter elkaar zou een overdosis Mulder betekenen. Dit terwijl ik niet de afkeer heb zoals sommige mensen die 1 keer per week op televisie al een overdosis vinden. Strafschopgebieden & reserves bestaat uit een aantal boeken die Mulder schreef vlak na zijn carrière als actieve voetballer. In ‘Opmars der strafschopgebieden’ (oorspronkelijk verschenen in 1978) zijn columns verzameld die hij eind jaren zeventig schreef, bijna uitsluitend over voetbal. De romanticus zoals hij later bekend werd, vooral dankzij zijn rol als sidekick in diverse televisieprogramma’s, is al zichtbaar. De penalty mag omgedoopt worden in ‘Panenka’ als eerbetoon, Jaap Bax die namens de NCRV eerste een wedstrijd uit het zaterdagvoetbal becommentarieerde voordat de profs op tv kwamen, de beleving van de cupfinal in Engeland, overleden vrienden en bekenden, het gaat nooit om de uitslag, om de naam, maar altijd om het gevoel dat er bij hoort. Mulder bleek een talent. ‘De eeuwige reserve’(uit 1982) is het vervolg. Meer columns, meer mooie verhalen, weer vele momenten van ontroering, gezien door de ogen van de elegante aanvaller die hij in zijn hoofd dan nog is. Prachtig verhaal is zijn herinnering aan het WK van 1974. Deeluitmakend van de selectie van 24 was hij 1 van de 2 afvallers. Tijdens zijn vakantie in Egypte ziet hij het Nederlands team furore maken. Minder actueel, meer herinneringen. Zijn Groningse jeugd komt zo nu en dan naar boven. (“Pazzop jonges, dei laange van Veelerveen is ’n fiez-ônt!”). Het zou ook gezien kunnen worden als handleiding voor de onwetende liefhebber. Voorbeeldtitels: De afmaker, een oranjeklant, een positieve gast, een hele grote, een schoppertje, een laatbloeier, de kankerpit en nog veel meer van deze beschrijvingen. Het derde boek in deze bundel is “Wereldtweekamp Schaken ‘85”. Beschouwingen van een buitenstaander over de tweede tweekamp tussen Karpov en Kasparov. Hier komt de observator in Mulder duidelijk naar boven. Op het oog onbelangrijke details blijken ineens bepalend te zijn voor winst en verlies, het spektakel om de schakers heen, de koude oorlog tijdens de officiële koude oorlog, een stukje geschiedschrijving. Als bonus nog een verhaal over taal “Het vriendje van Jesper Olsen” (1984), over de taal van sportverslaggevers. Prachtige bundel weer, Mulder is vooral goed als stukjesschrijver. Deze vierde bundeling is daar een mooi bewijs voor. Quote: “Dagen vóór de historische Wembley-triomf van de famous Dutch had de Britse pers de toeschouwers het vooroordeel als een bezetene ingehamerd. Houden vol (deel 7), Door dik en dun (deel 4) en Zetten door (deel 2). De vierde (deel 3) werd me bijna in het schoot geworpen. Een rommelmarkt op het moment dat ik net in de trein een boek had uitgelezen. Ik moest wel even kijken. Deze editie had ik nog niet, kostte ook niet alles en op de terugweg bij het overstappen had ik ook deze uit. Blijft leuk. Nu maar eens een lijstje aanleggen van ontbrekende nummers, zodat ik geen dubbelen ga aanschaffen. Heb even gezocht, maar kwam geen lijstje tegen na het googlen. Moet er toch wel zijn?
